Despite the mayor of Yangon testing positive for COVID-19, chief doctor of South Okkalapa township hospital Dr Win Maw Oo told this newspaper that he was in good health.
On Tuesday, December 8, Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe, who is also the chair of the Yangon City Development Committee and the minister of Development Affairs, was diagnosed with the virus.
According to a statement from the YCDC, the mayor became ill while conducting ground inspections and COVID-19 awareness and prevention campaigns at local markets on December 8 and subsequently had himself tested. His COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed by tests, and he is currently receiving treatment at South Okkalapa Hospital.
A COVID-19 test confirmed that the mayor was indeed admitted to the hospital. According to Dr. Win Maw Oo, he arrived at 6:30pm and is in good health.
According to the mayor, he will not be admitted to the intensive care unit because his condition is not life-threatening.
